Ego

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

The Ego. A term most of us generally link to more negative associations. What do you think Ego means?… As a noun, it means a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance. Psychoanalysis of the Ego is the part of the mind that mediates between the conscious and the unconscious and is responsible for reality testing and a sense of personal identity.

Let's simplify Ego with the distinction of, the identification of one's self. Our identity (ego) usually starts with our name. It is one of our first "I am"s. After that can come (in no particular order) race, gender, ethnic background, religion, position in the family, or country. One of the biggest mistakes we make is how we associate the objective distinction of ego with how someone with a high or low ego is perceived. Our ego is not good or bad; it simply is. The ego also distorts the reality of what we truly are, which is what is before the ego. When we get stuck in the who, we lose the what. And the who (ego) is nothing more than a thought of ourselves, not the core (what) of ourselves.

My goal in writing, speaking, and coaching is to grow Awareness. I've become a student and advocate for something (Awareness) that has a great (underutilized) value for us all. I’ve been on the side of having an inflated ego and a narrow perspective. Today, I am experiencing life with a deflated ego and expanded awareness. I used to think the grass was "most certainly greener on the other side," Now I understand there are no sides. We get access to see how green the grass truly is from where we have always been and realize that the grass is greener where we water it.
